Social Media Defined
This term relates to information, such as ratings, comments, pictures or videos that are shared between friends, using the web as the storage location.

The way in which people become aware of the information shared is through their digital connections with others. For example, a person may have a wonderful (or bad) experience when having dinner at a local restaurant. They could let all their friends know about what happens, by using their cell phone. They could even take a picture of the food so that "literally; the whole world can enjoy the special moment.

The good, and potentially bad thing, is that the information shared can very rapidly impact many other people. For example, within four hours of first prototype version of Facebook being created in a dorm room, there were 450 visitors and 22,000 downloads of photographs.
